After the online premiere of One Night in January: Counting the Cost of Homelessness writer/director/producer Stephen Newton was interviewed for an episode of WETS FM’s Community Forum hosted by Wayne Winkler.

Before its release in April 2014, Jim Blalock of WETS FM, the East Tennessee State University NPR affiliate, interviewed producer Jane Hillhouse and writer/director Stephen Newton about their forthcoming documentaryOutcasts: Surviving the Culture of Rejection a feature length film that asks the question: Why does the US incarcerate more people than any other country in the world?

On May, 2, 2025, the Maryland Writers Association hosted Stephen Newton as their featured speaker. The meeting was held via Zoom from 7 PM to 9 PM as part of the group's  First Friday's program, which features poets and writers throughout the year.

‘One Night in January: Counting the Cost of Homelessness’ title is a reference to a national census of homeless Americans that’s organized annually to attempt to count the number of people experiencing homelessness in a city on the coldest night of the year.

Among the many issues facing Americans today, homelessness has long been at the forefront. It’s an issue that struck home with filmmaker Stephen Newton, inspiring him to make his latest film – one that addresses the subject in a concise, forthright fashion.
